The Teaching of Listening

Listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying. This involves understanding a speaker's accent or pronunciation, his grammar and his vocabulary, and grasping his meaning (Howatt and Dakin). An able listener is capable of doing these four things simultaneously. Willis (1981:134) lists a series of micro-skills of listening, which she calls enabling skills. They are:

predicting what people are going to talk about guessing at unknown words or phrases without panic using one's own knowledge of the subject to help one understand identifying relevant points; rejecting irrelevant information retaining relevant points (note-taking, summarizing) recognizing discourse markers, e. g. , Well; Oh, another thing is; Now, finally; etc. recognizing cohesive devices, e. g. , such as and which, including linking words, pronouns, references, etc. understanding different intonation patterns and uses of stress, etc. , which give clues to meaning and social setting understanding inferred information, e. g. , speakers' attitude or intentions.

According to Bulletin (1952), listening is one of the fundamental language skills. It's a medium through which children, young people and adults gain a large portion of their education--their information, their understanding of the world and of human affairs, their ideals, sense of values, and their appreciation. In this day of mass communication (much of it oral), it is of vital importance that our pupils be taught to listen effectively and critically, he says.

Listening to and understanding speech involves a number of basic processes, some depending upon linguistic competence, some depending upon previous knowledge that is not necessarily of a purely linguistic nature, and some depending upon psychological variables that affect the mobilization of these competence and knowledge in the particular task situation. The listener must have a continuous set to listen and understand, and as he hears the utterance, he may be helped by some kind of set to process and remember the information transmitted. His linguistic competence enables him, presumably, to recognize the formatives of the heard utterance, i. e. , to dissect out of the wave form of the morphemes, words, and other meaning-bearing elements of the utterance.

Listening is a receptive skill, and receptive skills give way to productive skills. If we have our students produce something, the teaching will be more communicative. This brings us to the must of integrating language skills. There are two reasons for using integrating activities in language classrooms:

To practice and extend the learners' use of a certain language structure or function To develop the learners' ability in the use of two or more of the skills within real contexts and communicative frame work.

Integrated activities, on the other hand, provide a variety in the classroom and thus maintain motivation and allow the recycling and revision of language which has already been taught separately in each skill.

How can we be certain that listening experiences will become more productive? Wittich tells us to distinguish the four levels existing in listening to radio or recordings:

Level 1. This mood is listening. Here, the sound remains in the background - there is usually limited comprehension, and, indeed, limited attention. One becomes directly aware of sounds only when they stop. Nevertheless, a certain amount of learning may take place.

Level 2. Here the purpose is relaxation, escape, getting your mind off something rather than on it. The material is comprehended but usually not analyzed for its value. This listening may result in useful ideas, but they are usually peripheral and/or accidental.

Level 3. On this level, answers are sought as a key to action. One listens to weather reports, traffic information from a plane-temporarily useful but what we might call forgettable transient information. This form of listening does not require long, sustained concentration.

Level 4. This is the stage of analytical and critical listening. The listener not only seeks a serious answer to a serious question but evaluates the quality of the answer. Round-table discussions, serious listening to talks, spirited conversation, symphonic music are at the fourth level. At this stage, listening to music is in the foreground of attention not in the background as on previous levels (Wittich and Schuller, 1962).

It is listening on the fourth level that primarily concerns us in our teaching. Such listening may add an emotional and dramatic quality. Radio and recordings highlight the importance of listening. Listening is as active as speaking (the other receptive skill), and in some ways even more difficult. It well requires attention, thought, interpretation, and imagination. To improve our learners' listening skills we should let them (Austin Shrope, 1970):

Adopt a positive attitude.
Be responsive.
Shut out distractions.
Listen for the speaker's purpose.
Look for the signals of what is to come.
Look for summaries of what has gone before.
Evaluate the supporting materials.
Look for non-verbal clues.
We can call listening a decoding -making sense of the message process. Each short stretch of meaningful material which is read or heard has to be;

(I) recognised as meaningful and understood on perception
(II) held in the short term memory long enough to be decoded
(III) related to what has gone before and /or what follows.

Out of this process come pieces of information which can be stored in the long term memory for recall later. We can show the whole process in the form of a model (Abbott and Wingard, 1985).
Perception of sounds, letter shapes, etc.

Initial recognition of meaning of short stretches
Material held in short term memory
Related to material already held in short term memory
Related to material arriving in short-term memory
Meaning extracted from message and retained in long-term memory Gist recalled later

We can divide the listening process into 3 stages:
Pre-listening (purpose must be given at this stage),
During (in-while) listening,
Post -listening (speaking).

There is an association between expectation, purpose, and comprehension, therefore a purpose should be given to our learners. We should train students to understand what is being said in conversations to get them to disregard redundancy, hesitation, and ungrammaticality. The major problem is the actual way listening material is presented to the students. We should give a clear lead in what they are going to hear; use some kind of visual back up for them to understand; give questions and tasks in order to clarify the things in their minds; and be sure that these tasks help in learning, not confusing. Students should learn how use the environmental clues; the speaker's facial expression, posture, eye direction, proximity, gesture, tone of voice, and that general surroundings contribute information.

In listening activities, we listen for a purpose. We make an immediate response to what we hear. There are some visual or environmental clues as to the meaning of what is heard. Stretches of heard discourse come in short chunks, and most heard discourse is spontaneous, therefore differs from formal spoken prose in the amount of redundancy 'noise' and colloquialisms, and its auditory character.

In listening to English as a foreign language, the most important features can be defined as:

Coping with the sounds,
Understanding intonation and stress,
Coping with redundancy and noise,
Predicting,
Understanding colloquial vocabulary,
Fatigue,
Understanding different accents,
Using visual and environmental clues.

This brings us to the thought that, while planning exercises, listening materials, task and visual materials should be taken into consideration. The teacher should produce a suitable discourse while using recordings. A preset purpose, ongoing learner response, motivation, success, simplicity, and feedback should be the things considered while preparing the task. Visual materials are useful for contextualization. We can also categorize the goals of listening as listening for enjoyment, for information, for persuation, for perception and lastly for comprehension and lastly to solve problems.

We can divide listening for comprehension into three stages;

1. Listening and making no response (following a written text, informal teacher talk)
2. Listening and making short responses (obeying instructions - physical movement, building models, picture dictation. etc.), true- false exercises, noting specific information, etc.
3. Listening and making longer response (repetition and dictation, paraphrasing, answering questions, answering comprehension questions on texts, predictions, filling gaps, summarizing, etc)

The purposes that should be in a listening activity are giving/providing:
- General information (understanding of the main points)
- Specific information (understanding of the particular items)
- Cultural interest (generally informing about the target language culture)
- Information about people's attitudes and opinions
- The organization of ideas
- Sequence of events
- Lexical items (words expressing noise / movement)
- Structural items (their use and meaning)
- Functional items (their form and use)
- Lack of sociocultural, factual, and contextual knowledge of the target language can present an obstacle to listening comprehension. In his Language and Language Learning (1960), Brooks discusses vital points for the student to be aware of, such as contradictions and omissions -aspects of sandhi-variation (the changes occur in natural speech as a result of environment, stress, intonation, rate of speed and so forth). Though Brook does not specially refer to the term " sandhi-variation ", he does refer to the phenomenon of sadhi in his examples: Jeet jet? (Did you eat yet?) (p. 50) . According to Brooks, native speakers in an informal situation "habitually reduce the clarity of speech signals to the minimum required for comprehension. "Brooks believes that it is necessary to give consideration also to the interdependence of language and culture; for example, register, expletives, verbal taboos, culture-bound vocabulary. He also mentions that there is a need to clarify and point out the differences between written and spoken English.

In order to teach listening skills, a teacher should firstly state the difficulties. For a student of a foreign language, accurate and intelligent listening is a necessity, and the teacher is responsible to help his / her learners to acquire this skill which provides the very foundation for learning and functioning in a language. That the teacher can observe and isolate the errors in speaking, but could not in listening is a difficulty. In listening, the learner can exercise no controls over the structural and lexical range of the speaker to whom he is listening. Nevertheless, any listener can learn to focus on significant content items, to explain in another way he can learn to listen selectively.

Helping the learners to distinguish sounds, teaching to isolate significant content and informational items for concentration may be provided by controlled listening exercises. One exercise is to give him certain performance objectives -to give him general informational questions that he should be able to answer after he listens the material for the first time. These questions should require only the isolation of facts clearly revealed in the material. Questions that require application or inference from the information contained in the listening exercise are best used at later stages or more advanced students.

More controls are necessary at less advanced levels. Sheets containing sequentially organized and significant questions on context and content -questions that call for one-word answers -serve as useful guides for the student. Such questions help him filter out and listen for significant information. The questions themselves suggest the content and provide the student with an organizational frame for selective listening.

For listening comprehension exercises, we tend to read passages, record news or broadcasts, or prepare lectures. All of them have value, but they are extremely difficult sources for early practice in selective listening. This type of listening exercises does not present the redundancies, the colloquialisms, the hesitations, the gestures and the facial expressions that are an inseparable part of the spoken language. They emphasize informational content and fail to provide the signals used to communicate information and meaning.

Since most of the actual listening the student will be exposed to outside of the class is likely to be real-life conversation, it seems wisest to use materials cast in real-life situations for listening comprehension exercises -at least at the beginning level. If the oral instruction of the course is contextualized -set into a " situation " - it should be easy enough to contextualize the aural practice as well. The teacher can easily adapt to listening exercises those situations through which the text presents oral drills and communicative activities, just by giving them a slightly different twist. Listening exercises should be as natural as the situations from which they grow. In other words, an exercise in listening comprehension must be as close as possible to a "slice of life" -neither a contrived situation nor an artificially delivered discourse. By means of this, a teacher has a great work to do, and has to be a very creative person in order to teach listening communicatively.

Duration: 20 minutes

Level: Upper Intermediate

Materials: Pictures, blackboard, tape, tape-recorder

Goals: Students are asked to understand when they listen to a speech. This lesson will at least make the students take one step to get accustomed to hearing and understanding what they hear. Objectives: By the end of the lesson the students will understand the significance of listening.

ACTIVITIES

Pre-listening Activities: The teacher asks the students what they are going to listen to. A discussion atmosphere is tried to be created. At this stage pictures are used effectively.

During Listening Activities: While students are listening to the tape the teacher asks them to take some notes.

Post-listening Activities: The teacher writes some questions on the board and asks them to answer the questions. They are also stimulated to talk and participate in the activity dominantly.

III. POST-LISTENING ACTIVITY

The teacher writes on the board some questions. Students answer these questions to test whether they understood what they have listened or not.

The Audiolingual Method

This method is based on the principles of behavior psychology. It adapted many of the principles and procedures of the Direct Method, in part as a reaction to the lack of speaking skills of the Reading Approach.

New material is presented in the form of a dialogue. Based on the principle that language learning is habit formation, the method fosters dependence on mimicry, memorization of set phrases and over-learning. Structures are sequenced and taught one at a time. Structural patterns are taught using repetitive drills. Little or no grammatical explanations are provided; grammar is taught inductively. Skills are sequenced: Listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed in order. Vocabulary is strictly limited and learned in context. Teaching points are determined by contrastive analysis between L1 and L2. There is abundant use of language laboratories, tapes and visual aids. There is an extended pre-reading period at the beginning of the course. Great importance is given to precise native-like pronunciation. Use of the mother tongue by the teacher is permitted, but discouraged among and by the students. Successful responses are reinforced; great care is taken to prevent learner errors. There is a tendency to focus on manipulation of the target language and to disregard content and meaning.

Hints for Using Audio-lingual Drills in L2 Teaching

1. The teacher must be careful to insure that all of the utterances which students will make are actually within the practiced pattern. For example, the use of the AUX verb have should not suddenly switch to have as a main verb.

2. Drills should be conducted as rapidly as possibly so as to insure automaticity and to establish a system.

3. Ignore all but gross errors of pronunciation when drilling for grammar practice.

4. Use of shortcuts to keep the pace o drills at a maximum. Use hand motions, signal cards, notes, etc. to cue response. You are a choir director.

5. Use normal English stress, intonation, and juncture patterns conscientiously.

6. Drill material should always be meaningful. If the content words are not known, teach their meanings.

7. Intersperse short periods of drill (about 10 minutes) with very brief alternative activities to avoid fatigue and boredom.

8. Introduce the drill in this way:
a. Focus (by writing on the board, for example)
b. Exemplify (by speaking model sentences)
c. Explain (if a simple grammatical explanation is needed)
d. Drill

9. Don’t stand in one place; move about the room standing next to as many different students as possible to spot check their production. Thus you will know who to give more practice to during individual drilling.

10. Use the "backward buildup" technique for long and/or difficult patterns.

Meaningful, Motivating, Memorable
The 3 M’s are essential in teaching. When you use songs in the classroom you are using something which is meaningful to students. Because they are interested in (some would say obsessed by!) this medium, they find this kind of learning extremely motivating, and of course memorable. This last point is reinforced when they subsequently actively listen to, or passively hear, the song outside the classroom, subconsciously consolidating the language learned.

Creates a positive learning environment
It is extremely important that students enjoy the learning process, and the use of songs ensures a happy learning atmosphere. It is important, where possible, to ask students to sing the song, not only to help improve pronunciation, but also to lift their spirits. Apart from the emotional pleasure gained from singing, the increased intake of oxygen cannot but put them in a good mood!

Involves “left and right” brains
Music enters the subconscious quickly and subtly. The brain is a pattern-seeker, so putting information in an organised framework such as a song makes it easier to remember. We know the brain is divided into left and right hemispheres - when we study language we are using the left hemisphere, but music uses the right hemisphere. Language students usually use just one hemisphere, but songs involve both hemispheres in the learning process, greatly increasing students’ potential.
Improves Grammar, Vocabulary and Pronunciation
Songs help make the learning of new words and structures more natural and long lasting. By singing along, students are naturally acquiring correct pronunciation. Many of the songs on this site highlight and exploit different Grammar points, as well as Vocabulary. Students’ awareness of rhyming words is also heightened in many of the activities.

Flexible, Authentic, Easily Available
The activities on this site can be adapted to any level, and are “real”. They are very easy to find – if the teacher doesn’t have a copy of the students’ favourite songs, the students will almost certainly have one.

The site is based on the Drupal framework, the same platform as Free Language, though they have taken it to quite another level altogether! It seems that the absolute best way to learn a language is to go to a country where it is spoken - live it and study it, simultaneously. This can be a challenging path to take, but the reward is instant progress, the fastest way from "I don't understand" to "As easy as falling off a log". Traveling, living and studying abroad is an exciting way to learn any language while broadening your cultural awareness.

All the theory, methods, etc., are excellent fodder for your intellectual mind and can lead to a deeper understanding of a language, it's writing system, grammar, pronunciation and the rest. MeGlobe is a web-based instant messenger client with realtime translation into 14+ languages. This Jabber-powered tool lets folks chat interlingually. Users are encouraged to help improve the translation engine's algorithm by suggesting better translations when things fall short.

Languages currently available with MeGlobe.com IM/translation client are: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

In addition to Jabber, MeGlobe leverages other Free Software projects to build their foundation: Drupal (main site), MediaWiki (help wiki), phpBB (forum). Somehow they managed to get all these working together with one account in Drupal! Nice :)

Every time you send a message on MeGlobe's™ network you have the opportunity to make our translations better. When you notice that a translation on MeGlobe™ is a little off, let us know by "editing" the translation. Your buddy will immediately see the corrected translation and at the same time you are contributing to our knowledge base.

These contributions are used to teach MeGlobe™ to become a better translator. Every correction from the community brings us closer to our goal of erasing the borders of language.

Quizlet.com is a great website for effectively learning vocabulary, for languages and anything else! For a quick video on how the whole thing works, check out the demo video. Cool fact: It was started by a 15-year-old high school student!

Basically, you can add and share vocabulary lists, make them public, private or share only with certain groups. Once you have them in the system (or you find an existing set you want to study), you can choose between several options for learning/familiarizing and self-assessment.

The site is slick, fast and has lots of active users. It's really a cool place to learn anything from the Greek Alphabet to TOEFL and SAT vocabulary and plenty more.

There are already gobs of lists available on the site - so many that individual attention is being brought to amazing collections available on the site, such as the HSK Test Vocabulary Preparation Pack and more.

So take a look at Quizlet when you get the chance. It's likely that content already exists for what you need to study! I have added this to all the language sections even though there are not vocabulary stacks yet for all of these. Reason being you can use the site to create any vocabulary lists you want - it's wide open!

The Quizlet Story

For lack of a professional writer working for Quizlet, here are some ramblings from me, Andrew Sutherland, creator of Quizlet, president of Brainflare, web developer, and high school student.

Quizlet is how I occupy my free time and even some of my non-free time. My mission for Quizlet is to make learning vocabulary not a chore. I know a lot of teachers assign vocabulary to students, but few students actually "absorb" words into their vocabularies after they take their test. Which kind of defeats the purpose, right? So Quizlet is my response - it aims to make learning fun, thus make learning effective. At the very least, it can help students do better on quizzes and tests even if they don't fully "absorb" their words.

I started Quizlet in October 2005, back when I was a mere 15-year-old (human years). I had just received a list of 111 French Animals to memorize from my magnanimous French teacher. I was puttering along with my dad with some call-and-response type quizzing. "Man, I love doing this" was NOT what I was thinking. So I put my thinking cap on, and the first line of code for Quizlet was written that night. Of course, that code was all deleted when I thought about what Quizlet would be. You really should plan first.

Quizlet is a shoestring operation. For its first 420 days, it was the work of only myself. I did all the designing, programming, debugging, and perfecting. The project had no product managers, no marketers, and no venture capitalists. It was just me and my testers. Recently I've realized some things are out of my field of expertise (I'm not a lawyer, for example). So there are a few other people involved these days.

Quizlet is free and will remain free to all users. The current plan is to offer targeted advertising on the non-studying pages. I'm hoping to make some deals with some educational and test-prep companies and perhaps some universities. If you're interested in advertising to my userbase of highly-motivated high-school and college students, shoot me a note (see above right).

Let's see, what haven't I covered? Ahh, the name Quizlet comes from Quizlette, the name of the "little" quizzes my French teacher gives. She could have charged royalties, but that just wouldn't be right…

The quality of the podcast audio and the lessons is great, and they provide transcripts with explanations of idiomatic expressions! Podcast topics range from fun stuff like dating and sports to business English. The brothers speak slowly and clearly so that students can understand even difficult material more easily.

Anki Free Flash Card Software for Debian/GNU Linux, Mac OS X and Windows Based on Spaced Repetition

Summary
Anki is a cool little app for learning vocabulary words and phrases. It uses spaced repetition to help increase learning speed and memorization by repeating more often the terms you don't know and gradually decreasing those that you do.

The app is free and is available for Debian GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and as source code here. The software can be used to learn any language - just create the flashcards and it takes care of the spaced repetition for you.

Also available here is an online version of the software that works right through your web browser and stores your vocabulary on the Anki server. Great for people learning in Internet cafés!

To do this, it tracks how well you remember each fact, and uses that information to optimally schedule review times. Summary
Yolango is a new (free!) site for learning English through online videos complete with transcripts and level divisions. It provides users with loads and loads of real video content from all over the Web. Those with an account can keep track of the videos they have watched recently and mark their favorite videos. It also maintains a scoreboard for user score rankings.

Many things are cool about this approach. It is straightforward, allows users to learn through content that they enjoy and can relate to, find other content based on keyword tags and expose themselves to literally thousands of videos on hundreds of topics all in one place. In addition to using tags, they've made it possible to further filter a keyword tag by "Category" (Music, Film, Travel, News & Politics...) or "Scenarios" (Transportation, Education, Dating and Relationships, Scandal and Gossip!...). The added transcripts are a boon to any English learner to improve not only listening comprehension, but also reading comprehension and, thus, writing skills.

Also available through the site are a series of activities for each video - pretty cool! You can choose activities such as fill in the blank, questions and definitions. (In order to do so, you have to have an account and be logged in.)

Yolango does a great job leveraging the immense volume of online videos and filtering them for the users to jump in and start learning. A great idea and an excellent execution. The site design is clean and lively, loads quickly and it would appear that there's a bright future for this hard-working team. Bravo Yolango!

The duration of each episode is about 5 minutes. During each episode, we introduce 2 English words. First, we give 3 to 5 example sentences, followed by the explanation of the meaning of the word. Most of the words are from the GRE word list which makes Just Vocabulary ideal for study purposes.

¿Cómo pensar en inglés?

¿Es posible llegar a pensar en inglés? Sí, pero no es tan fácil. Descubre qué tienes que hacer para conseguirlo.

Muchos métodos para aprender inglés insisten en que la mejor manera de aprender la lengua anglosajona es "pensando" en inglés.

Pero, ¿es posible que un hispanohablante llegue a pensar en inglés? Sí, pero no es fácil.

Se sabe que el pensamiento está estrechamente vinculado al lenguaje. Por tanto, pensamos en un idioma determinado porque hablamos en ése idioma. De ahí que para pensar en inglés sea necesario, a mi juicio, cumplir dos requisitos:

1) Tener una sintaxis sólida, es decir, ser capaz de hilar frases gramaticalmente correctas sin titubear.

2) Tener un vocabulario amplio.

Ambas condiciones sólo se pueden alcanzar con mucha práctica y constancia dado que se trata de crear dentro del cerebro un archivo adicional donde poner los nuevos códigos (en este caso del inglés). Dentro de ese nuevo archivo (habitación) debes poner a un nuevo inquilino (el inglés) a convivir con el viejo inquilino (el español) sin que ambos se comuniquen. Por tanto, habrás de crear viviendas separadas y estancas. El nuevo inquilino tendrá inicialmente una habitación muy pequeña y con poco mobiliario (vocabulario) y por tanto intentará todo el tiempo pasarse a la habitación del viejo inquilino para sentirse más cómodo. Cuantos más muebles y espacio (vocabulario y sintaxis) le demos al nuevo inquilino más cómodo se sentirá y no querrá abandonarnos o mezclarse con el español.

Es lógico que este proceso sea más fácil de realizar si vives en un país anglosajón al estar recibiendo continuamente estímulos externos. En este caso, el cerebro se acostumbra a imitar y copiar. Por el contrario, cuando vives en tu país tienes que hacer tú solo el esfuerzo de crear esos estímulos, buscando palabras en el diccionario, viendo películas, leyendo en inglés y apuntándote a clases de inglés.

Algunos consejos para que el nuevo inquilino (el inglés) tenga más espacio en tu cabeza:

1. Busca razones para quererle (un trabajo mejor pagado, conocer gente, otras culturas, viajar, leer textos de tu profesión, etc.). Cuando algo te gusta es más fácil aprender a dominarlo.

2. Visita todos los días al nuevo inquilino de tu cerebro para darle más espacio y decorar su habitación con nuevas palabras, nuevas frases, nuevas expresiones, nuevos sonidos. Así se hará independiente y no sentirá deseos de irse a vivir con su vecino, el inquilino español, dando lugar al terrible Spanglish.

3. Dale especial importancia a la sintaxis, es decir, la forma correcta de hilar las palabras en una frase en inglés . Este es el principal obstáculo para los hispanohablantes ya que la sintaxis del español no se parece nada a la del inglés. Con un ejemplo lo verás más claro. En español decimos "El juego acabó." Probablemente pensarás que en inglés esta misma frase se dice: " The game finished" y no se te ocurre pensar en: "The game is over", que sería lo correcto. Como ves la estructura inglesa no se asemeja en nada a la del español. Ello nos obliga a aprender las frases tal y como se dicen en inglés y no traduciendo literalmente.

4. Ve poquito a poco. Primero palabras simples, luego frases sencillas, después más vocabulario y estructuras más complejas. Procura no darte empachos -por ejemplo escuchando películas en inglés sin subtítulos- porque te desmotivarás y querrás echar fuera de tu cabeza al nuevo inquilino por sentirte incapaz de comprenderlo.

5. Intenta buscar un intercambio o frecuentar lugares donde haya nativos de habla inglesa. El típico Pub Irlandés, por ejemplo. Se trata de que el nuevo inquilino de tu cerebro aprenda por imitación y pueda crear imágenes nuevas escuchando a otros hablar.

6. Ten paciencia. Recuerda que no has dejado de hablar español ni un solo día desde que balbuceaste tus primeras palabras y que por eso ahora te resulta fácil pensar y hablar en español. Llegar a dominar un segundo idioma requiere, por lógica, también mucho tiempo de exposición.

APRENDER INGLES PUEDE SER DIVERTIDO

Para muchas de las personas que conozco, uno de sus propósitos principales de superación personal - además de bajar de peso o dejar de fumar - es el de aprender inglés. Comenzar no siempre es fácil y mantener constancia en las clases tampoco lo es. Por si esto fuera poco, la sensación de que no hay un progreso significativo luego de un tiempo de asistir a clases complica aún más el proceso de aprender inglés.

Todo esto suena un poco desalentador y aunque no es mi intención, si es importante estar conciente que aprender un idioma correctamente requiere de tiempo y esfuerzo.

Por otro lado, también hay que tener en cuenta que hablar un nuevo idioma, sobretodo el inglés, te puede abrir muchas puertas y bien vale la pena invertir tiempo y esfuerzo en aprender inglés o cualquier otro idioma.

Pero afortunadamente no todo es tan difícil como parece y con un poco de ganas y de creatividad, sin importar el nivel de inglés en el que estemos ubicados, siempre podemos hacer algo para convertir lo “difícil y tedioso” en una experiencia agradable y divertida. Es justamente lo anterior lo que nos animó a escribir el siguiente artículo con algunos consejos divertidos para aprender inglés.

Encontrarás consejos para aprender inglés que aplican a personas con diferentes niveles de habilidad. Ya seas principiante, intermedio o avanzado encontrarás consejos útiles para ti.

Antes de comenzar, una breve nota para principiantes: Una de las ventajas del inglés con respecto a otros idiomas, es que siempre sabemos un poco de vocabulario ya que aún sin darnos cuenta, usamos el idioma de manera cotidiana y lo vemos en todos lados: anuncios espectaculares, comerciales, programas de radio y TV, revistas de casi todo tipo, en la computadora, en Internet, etc. La situación es que ya “no lo vemos” y precisamente por eso se da por entendido. Hay que tomar esta ventaja a nuestro favor.

Tip #1 Aprovecha el Séptimo Arte para Aprender Inglés

El cine en casa es una de las actividades más entretenidas y educativas que hay. Con los avances en la tecnología del entretenimiento, hoy en día podemos seleccionar el idioma y elegir entre si queremos ver subtítulos o no. Además, podemos ver secciones específicas una y otra vez.

Principiantes: Selecciona alguna película, quita la opción de subtítulos y déjala en inglés. Lo que tienes que hacer es tratar de reconocer palabras y asociarlas con acciones visuales. También intenta repetirlas como lo hacen los actores. Esto es lo que realmente hacen los bebés al aprender a hablar: oyen, asocian y repiten. No se trata de entender todas y cada una de las palabras, solo de reconocer sonidos y asignarles una imagen, no más. Te sorprenderá ver que entiendes más de lo que crees porque el todo (imagen, audio, expresiones, lenguaje corporal, etc.) le da un significado a lo que se habla en la pantalla.

Intermedios: Dependiendo de la cantidad de vocabulario, puedes entender más palabras y asociar más acciones, inclusive puedes poner los subtítulos en inglés para confirmar vocabulario, verbos, etc. El entendimiento de la trama se hace más claro y se entienden mejor los diálogos. Intenta ir repitiendo partes de los diálogos para efectos de pronunciación.

Avanzados: Si ya tienes un buen manejo del inglés, puedes enfocarte en la repetición de palabras para mejorar tu pronunciación, aprender expresiones idiomáticas, reforzar el uso de tiempos gramaticales, etc. Inclusive y dependiendo del tipo de película que estés viendo, puedes aprender un poco de cultura.

Una variante del cine es la TV por cable. Hay todo tipo de programas prácticamente para cualquier audiencia y estoy seguro que encontrarás algo de tu interés. Si el programa que te interesa tiene subtítulos, te recomiendo que los cubras para que no te distraigas y te fuerces a entender directamente en inglés.

Tip #2 Cantando y Aprendiendo

Cantar es una de las habilidades naturales que tenemos los seres humanos. Qué tan bien o mal lo hagamos es subjetivo, pero indudablemente es una buena manera de aprender inglés.

Principiantes: Canta melodías fáciles. Las canciones populares o infantiles son melodías muy sencillas en vocabulario y pronunciación. La mayoría de las veces son lentas, melodiosas y fáciles de recordar. Infantilizar un poco el aprendizaje no es malo, recuerda que ESTAS APRENDIENDO y así aprenden los bebés.

Intermedios: Escoge canciones más difíciles de algún cantante o grupo que sea de tu agrado. Primero lee la letra de la canción en voz alta y repítela unas tres veces antes de cantar con la grabación. Una vez que te sientas a gusto con la velocidad y la pronunciación, sigue la grabación. Anota algunas palabras para incrementar tu vocabulario. Puedes usar la técnica de mapa de palabras y/o un buen diccionario para esto. Evita traducir porque quizás no le encuentres sentido a las palabras. Recuerda que la asociación de ideas en inglés y en español es muy diferente y en muchos casos, no existe traducción literal para algunas palabras. Trata de pensar directamente en inglés.

Avanzados: Haz lo mismo que los intermedios, solo que usa Rap, Hip Hop - si lo soportan tus oídos - o canciones complicadas y rápidas. Para complementar, puedes marcar frases idiomáticas y “slangs” como expresiones populares, dobles sentidos, vocabulario familiar, etc.

Tip #3 Cuenta Cuentos

La lectura es básica para adquirir vocabulario. No importa si es una revista, un libro o un manual, lo importante es que sea una lectura que nos atraiga.

Principiantes: Te recomiendo lecturas que contengan muchas imágenes como: revistas de salud, moda y deportes en general. También los cuentos infantiles pueden servir para esta práctica. La idea es asociar palabras a imágenes y así incrementar tu vocabulario. Esto no solo ayuda a incrementar tu vocabulario si no que ayuda a entrenar a tu mente a pensar en inglés. Los anuncios también pueden ser una buena fuente para este ejercicio.

Intermedios: Puedes usar lecturas más especializadas como revistas temáticas y hasta manuales. La idea es reconocer y adquirir vocabulario. Leerlas en voz alta es también una buena idea ya que ayuda a fijar el vocabulario, mejora tu pronunciación e incrementa tu fluidez en inglés.

Avanzados: Las novelas y libros completos de temas de tu interés son un gran reto. No solo enriqueces tu vocabulario si no que te familiarizas con diversas estructuras gramaticales y al mismo tiempo aprendes de otros temas. Leerlas en voz alta también es una buena idea.

Existe software que utilizan las personas con debilidad visual para ayudarse a trabajar con sistemas informáticos, pero también es ideal para practicar individualmente tu vocabulario, solo necesitas un micrófono, bocinas y un poco de tiempo. Unicamente tienes que seleccionar alguno que se ajuste a tus recursos.

Tip #4 Díctale a tu PC

El software de reconocimiento de voz cada DIA es mejor y más fácil de instalar. Si dispones de una PC puedes tomar ventaja de esto.

Todos los niveles: puedes dictarle a la máquina vocabulario frases simples y complejas, expresiones, etc. La pronunciación, las inflexiones y la intención en tu voz es importante para que el software haga lo que le pides. Dicta cartas, memos, circulares…¡Tu imaginación es el límite!!

Tip# 5 Haz Que Tu PC Lea Por Ti

El software de “text to speech” (texto a voz) es una gran ayuda cuando tienes dudas respecto a la pronunciación de alguna palabra. Este software esta diseñado para personas con debilidad visual y puede leer la información que “ve” en la pantalla. Al principio las voces utilizadas eran muy robóticas, pero ahora han ido mejorando notablemente y son una excelente ayuda. En nuestro caso, solo hay que escribir la frase y pedirle al programa que la lea. Puedes hacer lo mismo con cualquier documento de texto o inclusive con páginas de Internet.

La clave está en la repetición

Me imagino que si alguien me dijera una frase en japonés -idioma que no hablo- lo único que escucharía sería un sonido totalmente ininteligible. No obstante, si me dijeran la palabra "sushi", sí la entendería.

¿Por qué? Simplemente porque la he escuchado y leído muchas veces en los restaurantes japoneses. Para mi (y cualquiera que viva donde hay restaurantes de sushi) es fácil saber que "sushi" es un tipo de comida japonesa.

Hace unos días pregunté a varios alumnos de distintas clases qué significaba la palabra "feedback". Tres me dieron la definición de "flashback", ninguno la de "feedback". Pensé que era algo extraño hasta que un día escuchando la radio me di cuenta que en una emisora en Madrid decían la palabra "flashback" muy frecuentemente para referirse a volver a un tiempo pasado con la música y los eventos históricos más importantes.

En estos dos ejemplos podemos ver la importancia de la repetición en el aprendizaje de un idioma.

Cuando aprendemos de pequeños un idioma no somos conscientes de cuantas veces repetimos palabras y frases porque ello forma parte del proceso natural de aprendizaje. Pero , lo cierto es que para aprender no hacemos otra cosa que repetir.

De mayores no nos gusta repetir

Al contrario de lo que le ocurre a un niño, el adulto se aburre rápidamente de repetir. Le parece una auténtica perdida de tiempo estar todo el día diciendo en voz alta o pensando en palabras que no significan nada. No obstante, no le ocurre lo mismo si esa palabra extranjera la escucha por los medios de comunicación. En ese caso se convierte rápidamente en parte de su vocabulario. Ejemplos hay muchos: internet, e-mail, corner, fútbol, factory, party, etc.

Se trata de palabras sueltas, pronunciadas en un contexto determinado; por lo que puede relacionar imagen y significado y por tanto, no le parecen extrañas. Las hace suyas sin ponerles pegas.

Sin embargo, si alguien nos dice que debemos repetir en inglés frases que no hemos escuchado nunca, nos resulta una auténtica pesadilla. Ésas palabras enlazadas una tras otra, no significan nada. Además, nos parece que hacemos el rídiculo poniendo la boca de extrañas maneras para intentar reproducir raros sonidos.

Existe una excepción: las canciones en inglés que gustan mucho. Nos aprendemos los sonidos sin saber qué significan por el puro placer de reproducir la melodía.

¿Qué hay que hacer?

Para que puedas ir aprendiendo inglés a buen ritmo deberás empezar por romper esa barrera imaginaria de "no me gusta repetir".

Cuando aprendemos un nuevo idioma debemos grabar el sonido y los símbolos que lo representan en algún lugar de nuestra cabeza. Igual que si fuera una placa de metal en la que deseamos hacer una inscripción; la repetición es el cincel con que grabamos las palabras.

Tómatelo como un desafío, aprende un mínimo de tres palabras nuevas cada día. Las escribes, buscas el significado en el diccionario, pones la pronunciación aproximada al lado de la palabra, te inventas frases utilizando esa palabra. El diccionario debe convertirse en tu gran aliado y las películas en inglés con subtítulos (en inglés) la puerta abierta hacia todos los sonidos nuevos que deberás asimilar. Recuerda que debes recordar cómo se escribe y cómo suena la palabra (son, en realidad, dos idiomas, el hablado y el escrito) . Si estás actualmente asistiendo a un curso de inglés, repasa todas las palabras nuevas antes de ir a la clase siguiente; avanzarás mucho más rápido. En definitiva, echa mano de tu imaginación y empieza ahora mismo.

How to Learn a Foreign Language

Learn a Foreign Language

1) Spend the time!

By far the most important factor is how much time you are immersed in the language. The more time you spend with the language, the faster you will learn. This means listening, reading, writing, speaking, and studying words and phrases. This does not mean sitting in class looking out the window, nor listening to other students who do not speak well, nor getting explanations in your own language about how the language works. This means spending time enjoyably connected to the language you are learning.

2) Listen and read every day!

Listen wherever you are on your MP3 player. Read what you are listening to. Listen to and read things that you like, things that you can mostly understand, or even partly understand. If you keep listening and reading you will get used to the language. One hour of listening or reading is more effective than many hours of class time.

3) Focus on words and phrases!

Build up your vocabulary, you’ll need lots. Start to notice words and how they come together as phrases. Learn these words and phrases through your listening and reading. Read online, using online dictionaries, and make your own vocabulary lists for review. Soon you will run into your new words and phrases elsewhere. Gradually you will be able to use them. Do not worry about how accurately you speak until you have accumulated a plenty of words through listening and reading.

4) Take responsibility for your own learning!

If you do not want to learn the language, you won’t. If you do want to learn the language, take control. Choose content of interest, that you want to listen to and read. Seek out the words and phrases that you need to understand your listening and reading. Do not wait for someone else to show you the language, nor to tell you what to do. Discover the language by yourself, like a child growing up. Talk when you feel like it. Write when you feel like it. A teacher cannot teach you to become fluent, but you can learn to become fluent if you want to.

5) Relax and enjoy yourself!

Do not worry about what you cannot remember, or cannot yet understand, or cannot yet say. It does not matter. You are learning and improving. The language will gradually become clearer in your brain, but this will happen on a schedule that you cannot control. So sit back and enjoy. Just make sure you spend enough time with the language. That is the greatest guarantee of success.

Es un disco que está diseñado para escucharlo contínuamente mientras duermes o te relajas cómodamente. Contiene una grabación en inglés y español con algunas técnicas para relacionar y aprender palabras más rapidamente, y para detectar similaridades entre el inglés y el español. Si escuchas el disco mientras estás despierto, descubriras estas técnicas y las podrás aplicar al estudiar el idioma acelerando tu aprendizaje.

Con éste hipnótico CD podrás hacer muchas de las cosas que pueden acelerar tu aprendizaje de idiomas: rodearte del idioma (contínuamente mientras duermes), instalar en tu mente poderosas instalaciones para abrir tu potencial de aprendizaje, recibir simultáneamente información en inglés y español para que tu mente la relacione, y sentirte mejor al utilizar el idioma.

Mientras tu duermes, tu mente recibe información en inglés y español y la va relacionando. También recibe técnicas para aprender palabras más rápidamente. Cuando lo utilizas cada noche tienes varias horas diarias de contacto con el idioma y de recursos que entran a tu inconciente.

Recomendaciones de Uso

En el CD encontrarás dos pistas de audio que son iguales (para aprovechar más la duración del disco). Contienen una inducción hipnótica en inglés y español, donde escucharás el inglés en un lado y el español en el otro. Durante la reproducción, la pista en inglés y la pista en español se intercambian para que tu mente reciba ambos idiomas en ambos hemisferios cerebrales. Como las pistas dicen prácticamente lo mismo durante la grabación, esto también hace que tu cerebro pueda correlacionar la información.

Está diseñado para escucharlo mientras duermes o descansas. Antes de irte a dormir, solo enciéndelo y deja que se repita toda la noche a un volúmen muy poco perceptible, como un murmullo lejano. Como fondo estan grabados sonidos de la naturaleza que te ayudarán a tener un sueño o un descanso más profundo y relajante. Irás encontrando el volúmen adecuado para ti. También es recomendable que lo escuches una o dos veces por semana con audífonos a un volumen en que puedas escuchar claramente toda la grabación.

Por la naturaleza y finalidad de la grabación es muy posible que te cause sueño tratar de escucharlo concientemente, es una respuesta normal, y no importa si te duermes mientras lo haces. Por eso es importante que No lo escuches cuando manejes maquinaria, medios de transporte, o en áreas o situaciones donde quedarse dormido represente algún riesgo. Escucha tu disco cuando estes en un lugar en el que te puedas relajar o dormir de forma segura.

Doctors tell patients to lay off nicotine, fatty foods, andcaffeine, and cellulite will probably lessen or disappear.

Paradoxically, topical applications of caffeine are said to reducethe appearance of cellulite. But, why?

Caffeine and Cellulite - Why the Opposite Reaction?

Caffeine in creams and lotions has the effect of tightening yourblood vessels. Tighter blood vessels lead to tighter skin,temporarily making your skin look smoother.

But this reaction is temporary. The connection between caffeine andcellulite does not work on the root cause - those fatty depositsthat cause a dimpled appearance on the skin.

Caffeine and Cellulite - What Do Manufacturers Say?

Some manufacturers of creams and lotions say that there is a directrelationship between caffeine and cellulite reduction.

They say that caffeine creams can somehow flush fatty deposits fromyour skin, ridding it of cellulite. Sort of a diuretic, but thistime instead of flushing out water from your body, the caffeinewill flush out fat and toxins.

It certainly sounds plausible. However, such claims have not yetbeen proven through published clinical research. And you just haveto be a little skeptical that cosmetics companies have vastlydifferent formulations.

If any sort of caffeine formula were proven by science, you'dexpect some sort of uniformity among these commercial preparations.

In 2000, the European Journal of Dermatology reported that out ofthe 32 creams and lotions they reviewed, the ingredients numberedanywhere from four to 31. What's more, these concoctions werehardly similar. Caffeine was found in only 14 preparations.

Caffeine and Cellulite - What Do Studies Say?
Scientists say that the cosmetics industry began connectingcaffeine and cellulite due to caffeine's distant association withaminophylline, which is a bronchodilator.
Perhaps the industry figured that since it relaxes the lungs itcould remove stress from the muscles, minimizing the appearance ofcellulite. But so far, there is no independent clinical researchthat connects caffeine and cellulite.

The only studies that have been conducted are by the makers ofcreams and lotions that use caffeine as the active ingredientagainst cellulite.

If you choose to use a cellulite cream, your best bet is to pickone and try it out. Make sure you give it plenty of time to workbefore giving up on it. If, after a few weeks of consistent use youfail to see any results, move on to the next option. Reputablecompanies will offer to let you return the product if it doesn'twork out for you... take them up on it.

Democrats Approve Deal on Michigan and Florida

WASHINGTON — To jeers and boos that showcased deep party divisions, Democratic Party officials agreed Saturday to seat delegates from the disputed Florida and Michigan primaries at the party’s convention in August but give them only half a vote each, dealing a setback to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The agreement, reached by the rules committee of the Democratic National Committee behind closed doors and voted on publicly before a raucous audience of supporters of the two candidates, would give Mrs. Clinton a net gain of 24 delegates over Senator Barack Obama. But this fell far short of her hopes of winning the full votes of both delegations and moved the nomination further out of her reach.

She now lags behind Mr. Obama by about 176 delegates, according to The New York Times’s tally, in the final weekend of campaigning before the nominating contests end.

Mrs. Clinton, who led the voting in the Michigan and Florida contests, which were held in defiance of party rules, picked up 19 delegates more than Mr. Obama in Florida and 5 delegates more than Mr. Obama in Michigan.

The deal prompted one of her chief advisers, Harold Ickes, a member of the rules committee himself, to declare that Mrs. Clinton’s fight may not be over, even though Mr. Obama’s advisers say he is only days away from gaining enough delegates to claim the nomination.

“Mrs. Clinton has instructed me to reserve her rights to take this to the credentials committee,” Mr. Ickes said before the final vote, raising the specter of a fight until that committee meets. His words drew cheers from Clinton supporters, including many who yelled, “Denver! Denver! Denver!” — implying that the fight could go all the way to the convention in that city.

Mr. Ickes said the outcome for Michigan was a hijacking of voters’ intent because it assigned delegates to Mr. Obama even though he did not win them as his name was not on the ballot.

Mrs. Clinton was in touch with Mr. Ickes throughout the day, aides said, and she instructed him to conclude his remarks with that message to the party. It remained an open question, though, how much leverage Mrs. Clinton would have after the primaries concluded on Tuesday.

The committee’s task was to resolve how to treat the delegates from Florida and Michigan, which had moved up their primaries earlier than the Feb. 5 date allowed by the party. Both Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama had agreed at the time to the party’s decision to penalize the two states by disallowing their delegates, but that decision was challenged, leading to the meeting on Saturday.

The committee members found themselves in a surprising drama that riveted hundreds of spectators, reporters and party activists in the ballroom of the Marriott Wardman Park hotel, as well as television audiences who could watch the session live on several cable networks.

The scene at the hotel was a wrenching one for many committee members, who brought into the room their own candidate loyalties, even as they tried to reach for compromise.

They were frequently badgered by members of the audience, who had obtained tickets last week to witness the meeting. They represented the two candidates, and many mocked the few expressions of party unity.

As the votes on the agreements were taken, one woman, wearing a blue “Team Hillary” shirt, shoved a man in a suit and tie wearing a small Obama button on his lapel. Another woman in a white Clinton shirt hung her head in her hands.

“That was a crime!” a man shouted.

“McCain in ’08! McCain in ’08!” a woman yelled from the back of the room. “No-bama! No-bama!”

The committee voted to restore the entire Florida delegation but give each delegate only half a vote, a penalty for moving up its primary and a warning to other states that might consider doing the same in 2012. The vote was 27 in favor and 1 abstention. The committee first turned back a motion, by a vote of 15 to 12, to seat the full delegation and give each delegate full voting rights.

The committee reached essentially the same decision about Michigan, voting 19 to 8 to seat all the delegates while giving each delegate only half a vote. But the decision seemed even more tortuous than that over Florida because of the bizarre circumstances of the primary.

Mrs. Clinton received 55 percent of the vote, but Mr. Obama’s name was not on the ballot and 40 percent of voters cast their ballots for “uncommitted.” The committee approved a plan giving Mrs. Clinton 69 delegates and Mr. Obama 59.

The deep wounds among Democratic partisans — and the unification challenges that lie ahead — were laid bare when the committee rendered its judgment around 7 p.m. Supporters of Mrs. Clinton jeered the decision.

But Obama supporters said the Clinton camp was upset because the decision showed the nomination contest was essentially over. “There is no more big concentration of delegates from anywhere left,” said Allan Katz, a Florida lawyer and member of the rules committee who supports Mr. Obama.

“This was their last big chance to move the goal posts and it failed,” he said.

Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton who attended the meeting on Saturday, played down the rancor. He applauded the Florida decision, but sharply criticized the Michigan outcome.

“It will be incumbent upon both of these candidates to try to bring the party together and unify the party,” Mr. Wolfson said. “It’s like one of these days when we have two contests and he wins one and we win one. From a delegate perspective, we’re obviously better off than a month ago.”

The agreement was voted on after an intense five-hour debate, played out on live television. It was followed by about three hours behind closed doors after the rules committee retreated for lunch.

It started with hundreds of demonstrators chanting outside, until torrential rains drove them away. Inside were the 28 members of the rules committee, who sat under the lights at a U-shaped conference table.

Throughout the day, there were multiple outbursts from people in the room, which particularly flared when representatives from Florida made their arguments. The speaker for the Clinton campaign, State Senator Arthenia Joyner of Florida, asked the committee to allow a full vote for each of the state’s 211 disputed delegates.

“I want it all,” Ms. Joyner said. “Yes, I’m asking for a full vote.”

Representative Robert Wexler of Florida, who was speaking on behalf of the Obama campaign, suggested that each of those delegates receive a half-vote. Mr. Wexler called it an “extraordinary concession, in order to promote reconciliation with Florida’s voters.”

Mr. Wexler received the brunt of the anger from a few dozen supporters of Mrs. Clinton who were seated on the ballroom floor. When he outlined the proposal for Florida — a deal that would give Mrs. Clinton 19 delegates more than Mr. Obama — he was jeered for not saying whether he would support a proposal to fully seat the delegates.

“Answer the question!” several people shouted. “Yes or no? Yes or no?”

And tempers flared in the discussion over Michigan too, especially after the Obama campaign proposed splitting the state’s delegates evenly between Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton.

At that point, Tina Flournoy, a Clinton adviser and member of the rules committee, said Mr. Obama’s proposal essentially called for overriding the will of the voters.

“What is being proposed here is that you go into a voting booth and at some point later down the road, someone decides that your vote is for someone else,” she said. “If we’re going to do that, let’s cancel 2012, and let’s divide all the delegates in all the states.”

The references to the will of the voters were a deliberate echo of the Florida recount in 2000. For weeks, Mrs. Clinton has been crusading for “every vote to count.” She even traveled to the epicenter of the recount debacle in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties, where she likened her call for counting all votes to the abolitionist movement, the current election turmoil in Zimbabwe and various civil rights struggles.

Mrs. Clinton had hoped that the rules committee would uphold the elections in Florida and Michigan so as to confer legitimacy on their popular vote; if they were added to her national tally, she would lead Mr. Obama in the popular vote. Mrs. Clinton hoped that would stir the passions of the party’s superdelegates, who would then swing to her side and choose her as the party’s nominee.

Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, opened the meeting by urging party activists who filled the hotel ballroom to think beyond the immediate concerns of their chosen candidates and begin working for the benefit of the party in the general election.

“This is not about Barack Obama,” Mr. Dean said. “This is not about Hillary Clinton. This is about our country. This is about restoring America to its greatness, to restoring our moral authority and to healing America at home. That’s what this is about.”
